Visual Worlds: “Nothing by Chance” at the Anderson Gallery through Oct. 12

The Anderson Gallery at Drake University is excited to reveal its upcoming retrospective exhibition, Visual Worlds: “Nothing by Chance.” The exhibition will open on Sept. 7 and will feature the works of celebrated printmaker and Drake alumnus, Richard Black, professor emeritus of art.

It will feature 100 works of art that span 60 years of image-making, all original works created by Black, FA’57. He is known for his skilled take on printmaking and his colorful intaglio prints. He will be at the exhibition’s opening.

An Iowa native, Black has been a staple of Drake’s art department for decades. He received his art degree in 1957 and switched from student to teacher in 1960. He remained as Drake’s printmaking professor for 34 years until his retirement in 1994.

During his teaching career, Black founded the Drake University Biennial Print Symposium, which brought nationally recognized printmakers to campus to showcase their unique creations and techniques.

Several national and international galleries have showcased Black’s work, including right here in Des Moines where he was the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center. He is also a member of The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, which elects members based on the quality of their work alone.

The exhibition will go from Sept. 7 to Oct. 12 with an opening reception on Sept.7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Anderson Gallery is located within the Harmon Fine Arts Center at 1310 25th St., at the corner of Carpenter Ave. and 25th St. Free public parking can be found along 25th St.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday 12–4 p.m. and Thursday evenings until 8 p.m., and by appointment.
