The Drake University
community and friends will gather to celebrate the research of 100 students and
faculty members at the annual Drake University Conference on Undergraduate
Research in the Sciences on Thursday, April 17.
“The
conference is a reminder of the constant collaboration between students and faculty
on research projects pursuing new scientific discoveries,” said Maria
Bohorquez, director of the Drake University Science Collaborative Institute.
The conference will
feature a wide variety of research projects on topics including: studying
exercise to help trauma care, comparing the potency of dried Echinacea
seedheads and leaves as immunostimulators and modeling Alzheimer’s disease in
mice.
Research
posters will be on display from 8-11 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. in Parents Hall in
Olmsted Center, 2875 University Ave. The conference display and oral
presentations, which will run from 10:30-11:30
a.m. and again at 1:15-2:30 p.m., are free and open
to the public.
The conference honors accomplishments of students researching in areas
including biology, chemistry; physics; environmental science and policy;
psychology; mathematics and computer science; biochemistry, cell, and molecular
biology; and pharmaceutical science.
In conjunction
with the conference, Kemin Industries, Inc. is sponsoring a special luncheon for
students, faculty and invited guests. The luncheon will feature keynote speaker
Ted Crosbie, vice president of global planting for Monsanto Co., representing
the Biosciences Alliance of Iowa (BAI), an initiative to coordinate efforts to
grow the biosciences industry in Iowa. His talk is titled “Stimulating Economic Development in the
Biosciences, Advanced Manufacturing and Information Technology Industries.”
