DRAKE PHARMACY TEAM TO COMPETE AT NATIONAL PHARMACY AND THERAPEUTICS COMPETITION

A
team of students from Drake University will compete in the annual
Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee Competition in San Diego on Friday, April 9.

The team consists of pharmacy students:

•        Brian Booher of Peoria, Ill.

•        Eugene Bulochnik of Eden Prairie, Minn.

•        Katie Owen of Woodbury, Minn.

•        Hilary Whelan of Eagan, Minn.

The students will compete against teams from seven other schools that have been narrowed down from over 20 original teams.

The
P&T Competition mimics the process used by hospitals and insurance
plans in deciding if a new drug should be placed on a list of approved
medications. The teams will review a class of medications to increase
platelets for a disease called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
(ITP).

The team will write a monograph of the designated drug,
assess cost-effectiveness and its place in therapy, and formally
present and defend their analysis and recommendations.

The
Drake team advanced to the nationals after winning a competition at
Drake in February against another pharmacy team. Professionals in the
managed care industry judged the competition.

The Pharmacy and
Therapeutics Committee Competition is held annually by the Academy of
Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP). Two years ago, the Drake team consisting
of four different pharmacy students finished in third place.
