Jones to return to Washington D.C. to reengage in national policy work

Originally appointed on July 1, 2024, as the 22nd dean of Drake Law School, Roscoe Jones has announced his tenure as dean will conclude on Aug. 7, 2026.

“After two wonderful years leading the Law School at Drake, my wife and I have decided to return home to Washington, D.C.,” said Jones. “Serena is eager to reconnect with the community she’s built there, and I am looking forward to reengaging in national policy work at a consequential time. I’m stepping down now to ensure the Law School will have cohesive leadership in place for the new school year. We are proud of the accomplishments of our community, and we look forward to seeing the Law School continue its successes in the years to come.”

During his tenure, Dean Jones advanced many important strategic initiatives, including student recruitment, alumni and donor engagement, new curricular programs, and enhanced visibility for the Law School. Specifically, under Dean Jones’ leadership, the Drake Law School was named to the top 100 law schools in the nation for the fourth consecutive year, while also enrolling a class with some of the highest metrics in law school history. Dean Jones also oversaw the creation of an AI & Law certificate, a joint JD-PhD program with the School of Education, and established the Dean’s Lecture Series on Leadership and the Law. Additionally, the Law School expanded resources for student opportunities in rural areas, and Dean Jones held the Dean’s recruitment tour to the Deep South and Southwest.

“The University is grateful for Roscoe’s leadership and contributions,” said Drake University President Marty Martin. “His decades of experience in government affairs and public policy have served us well, and we wish him the best as he returns to work in Washington, D.C.”

Drake University is finalizing next steps for an interim dean appointment and will share further information in the weeks ahead.
