Prairie Meadows commits $600,000 leadership gift as the Blue Oval prepares for its next century of excellence
As it celebrates its 100th anniversary, Drake University proudly announces the launch of the Drake Stadium Centennial Campaign—a $6 million fundraising initiative to preserve the legacy and ensure the future of one of America’s most iconic athletic venues. The campaign has received a significant boost through a $600,000 leadership gift from Prairie Meadows, a longtime supporter of Drake Athletics and the Greater Des Moines community.

Opened in 1925, Drake Stadium is a landmark facility for track and field and a vital hub for youth athletics, community events, and national competitions. Home to the world-famous Drake Relays—known as “America’s Athletic Classic”—the stadium has hosted some of the greatest names in track and field history, including Jesse Owens, Wilma Rudolph, Lolo Jones, Ryan Crouser, Allyson Felix, Jenny Simpson, and Dalilah Muhammad.

Drake Stadium is also the home of Drake Football. The Bulldogs compete in the NCAA Division I FCS, as members of the Pioneer Football League (PFL). Drake Stadium is the largest stadium in the Pioneer Football League.

“Drake Stadium is more than just a facility—it’s a century of memories, records, and community pride,” said Drake University President Marty Martin. “With the support of partners like Prairie Meadows and the commitment of our alumni and fans, we’re building the next 100 years of greatness.”

A Storied Venue with Global Impact
Located in the heart of the Drake University campus, Drake Stadium’s Blue Oval has seen world records fall and Olympic legends rise. In addition to the Drake Relays, the stadium has hosted many of the nation’s premier track and field meets, including:
- USA Track and Field Championships (2010, 2013, 2018, 2019)
- NCAA Outdoor Championships (2008, 2011, 2012)
- AAU Junior Olympics (2009, 2014, 2018, 2023, with future events in 2026 and 2030)
- Iowa High School Track and Field Championships: hosted annually for more than 50 years, the current coed format ranks among the nation’s largest high school championships.
These events draw thousands of athletes and fans to Des Moines, generating millions in economic impact and showcasing Iowa on a national and international stage.

Centennial Campaign: Reimagining a National Treasure
Drake Stadium was last renovated in 2006. To remain a destination of choice for championship events and continue hosting elite competitions like the Drake Relays, Drake University is undertaking a series of critical infrastructure upgrades. Planned improvements include:
- Track surface replacement: Updating the Blue Oval and field event areas to meet world-class competition standards
- Field surface replacement: Replacing the infield turf to meet international competition standards
- Two reversible long jump/triple jump and pole vault runways: Required for NCAA championships
- Enhanced lighting systems: Meeting broadcast standards and improving fan experience
- Video board/scoreboard upgrades: Updating with modern, high-resolution displays
- Press box renovation: Creating a more functional, up-to-date workspace for media and staff
- Permanent hospitality space: Offering a modern, upscale visual and guest experience for events like the Drake Relays
These enhancements will position Drake Stadium as one of the finest track and field venues in the nation and ensure it remains a central part of Drake’s identity and Iowa’s athletic ecosystem for generations to come.
“Drake Stadium is a place where legends compete and communities gather,” said Gary Palmer, President and CEO of Prairie Meadows. “We are proud to support its next chapter and help keep the Blue Oval shining bright.”
