The Public Relations capstone class (above) is working with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Iowa.

PR Planning and Management students will be building strategic plans for the Iowa Public Health Association.

SPC class Public Affairs Planning & Management will be working for Prevent Child Abuse Iowa.

PR Writing is working with the Iowa United Nations Association.

Advanced Strategic Messaging is working with Urban Plains – acting as the marketing department to execute campaigns in real-time and adjust via ongoing research throughout the semester.

The Advertising Capstone is doing live research that will inform Urban Plains work and our new Digital Media Production capstone. 

Drake earns two Pacemaker finalists

Two student-run magazines have been named Pacemaker finalistsDrake Mag and Drake Political Review.

Drake Mag has been either a Pacemaker finalist or winner for the past nine years. The Spring 2024 issue joins 16 other student-led magazines in the hunt for one of the coveted Pacemaker Awards.

The Fall 2023 issue of Drake Political Review was also named a Pacemaker finalist – DPR’s first time since the title’s founding in 2015.

Drake is one of only two schools to have two titles named finalists.

Three students were also named finalists in individual categories. Recent grad Sarah Jamil (MBM, MJJ) is a finalist in the Best Feature category for her Drake Mag story “A Generation in Crisis.” Lily Eckenrode (GD, ’24) is up for Best Cover for her treatment of the Spring ’24 issue of Drake Mag. And Maddie Kruse (GD, ’24) is up for a Best Magazine Page/Spread Pacemaker for her work on “Savoring Summer.”

The Pacemakers winners, along with the Pinnacle Awards, will be announced at the ACP/CMA Conference in New Orleans at the beginning of November. Those who score a plaque will join the Spring 2023 edition of Urban Plains, which won its fourth Online Pacemaker back in March.

T-D hosting workshop

More student awards

Lia Reichmann, Mack Swenson, and Andrew Kennard were named finalists in the SPJ National Competition for General News Reporting (Small) for their story “President Martin explains higher pay during the year of faculty salary cuts.”  

McCade Gowdy was also a finalist in In-Depth Reporting (Small) for his piece “The Anti-Suburbia” from Urban Plains. 

Parker Wright received a “Best of SNO” award Wednesday, Sept. 26 for his Times-Delphic article detailing the legal battle between DMACC and Drake University.

Eve Loehrer also received a “Best of SNO” award Friday, Sept. 27 for her Times-Delphic article about Minnesotan students’ opinions on Vice President nominee Tim Walz

Iowa Newspaper Foundation Scholarships and Internships applications open 

Applications are now available for the 2025 INF Paid Internship program.

Scholarship applications are now available for the 2025 – 2026 school year. The INF offers a limited number of college scholarships for students preparing for careers in the newspaper industry.

Scholarship opportunity

The JAMES ALAN COX FOUNDATION is personally inviting students to apply for its annual photojournalism awards given to students in honor of Mr. James Alan Cox. Jim Cox, a photojournalist for KTVK-3TV in Arizona, was killed in a media helicopter collision over Phoenix 17 years ago.

They offer five undergraduate photojournalism awards in the amount of $2,500 each, awarded to the students via direct payment to their universities: 
4 awards for video work 
1 award for still photography 
 
They also offer one graduate student photojournalism award for video work in the amount of $2,500, awarded to the graduate student via direct payment to their university. 

In addition, one or two $1,500 Honorable Mention scholarships will be awarded to one or two college or graduate students.

Fellowship opportunity

The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation is supporting a unique fellowship program aimed to provide female students majoring in any forms of Journalism, both behind as well as in-front of the camera/microphone, the opportunity to attend the 2024 Gracie Leadership Awards. Selected applicants will receive one complimentary (non-transferable) ticket to attend the event for Tuesday, November 19 at Tribeca 360 in New York. (Travel expenses not included.) Students that are selected will be required to submit a written or video blog about the experience following the event as well as receive a complimentary membership in the Alliance for Women in Media. The deadline to apply is Friday, October 4, 2024

Students needed for workshops

Carnegie Higher Ed will on campus Oct. 2, to host three workshops with current students to learn more about the personality of our student body. These workshops, along with other efforts, will be used by Carnegie to help Admission and UCM better segment and target students based on personas.

All students are invited, as long as they are an undergraduate and have completed one term at Drake. To incentivize attendance we will be offering food during the workshops as well as entering students into a raffle for several $50 gift cards. Register here.
