Drake University choirs will come together to highlight societal issues of immigration, homelessness and housing in a special performance on Sunday, April 18.
Aimee Beckmann-Collier, Drake’s director of choral studies, will conduct Drake Choir, Chamber Choir and Drake University/Community Chorus, who will perform at 3 p.m. on the Jordan Stage in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main, 2507 University Ave.
The concert will conclude the Drake choral program’s series of presentations on issues of home in Iowa. The performance, which is designed to help singers and listeners connect to key societal issues through music and to elicit a spirit of service in the community, will feature pieces including:
- “The Road Home”
- “Homeland”
- “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor”
The performance, entitled “Where You Belong,” will focus on the concept of home and will explore issues including eternal home, leaving and returning home, homelessness, refugee resettlement and safe and affordable housing.
The performance will feature music by a wide variety of composers, including Brahms, Berlin, Paulus, Arlen and Allaway, as well as dialogue by local actors, all leading to a high level of audience engagement.
“Choral music is an especially important vehicle for helping people to understand that they are part of something much larger than themselves,” said Beckmann-Collier.
A volunteer fair, providing an opportunity for audience members to sign up to assist one or more of 18 area agencies, will be held after the concert.
