Drake University is pleased to announce the appointment of Hope Bibens as the next dean of Cowles Library. Bibens, who currently serves as the associate dean of the library, will assume her new role on July 1, 2026.
The appointment was approved by the Drake University Board of Trustees during their January executive session following a recommendation from University leadership. As dean, Bibens will lead the University’s library operations, archival collections, and student-centered research services.
“We are thrilled to have Hope step into this vital leadership role,” said Drake University Provost Sue Mattison. “As associate dean, Hope has already demonstrated a deep commitment to the mission of Cowles Library and the success of our students. Her knowledge of the Drake community and her vision for the future of academic libraries make her the perfect successor to continue the library’s legacy of excellence.”
A Commitment to Academic Excellence
Bibens brings a wealth of experience and institutional expertise to the deanship. She has served at the University since 2014 in multiple roles, including Associate Professor of Librarianship, Associate Dean of Cowles Library, and Director of University Archives and Special Collections. She has also served as Chair of the Intercollegiate Athletic Council, and, currently, she serves as Drake University’s Faculty Athletics Representative.

“Drake University represents a unique community where the library serves as a cornerstone for both innovation and tradition,” said Bibens. “I am honored to lead our dedicated team and look forward to building even stronger relationships with faculty, staff, and students as we evolve to meet the needs of not just our University, but the changing world.”
Honoring Dean Teri Koch
Bibens succeeds Dean Teri Koch, who will transition into a new chapter following a distinguished career at Drake. Koch is set to take a transitional sabbatical effective July 1, 2026, with her official retirement planned for the end of the year.
“Dean Koch has been a crucial member of our academic community for nearly 40 years,” said Mattison. “Her leadership at Cowles Library has ensured our library remains a vibrant hub for student discovery and collaborative research. We are deeply grateful for her years of service and her dedication to the University.”
