Mel Dygert

College: School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Major: Public Relations

Minor: Marketing

Hometown: Johnston, Iowa

Q: Why did you choose to attend Drake?

A: I looked everywhere for school. Both my parents went to Drake and my older brother is also a Bulldog. My dad worked here for a time, and my mom still works here. I tried really hard to find another school that offered the same education and opportunities as Drake … but I just couldn’t find it. I love Des Moines, and I love the community, so I decided to stay close.

Q: What is your favorite campus memory?

A: My favorite campus memory was watching the women’s basketball team win the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). We had confetti, awards, and recognition. It was my first year being the women’s basketball emcee, so it filled me with gratitude to be able to work for and participate in the arena atmosphere for such an accomplished team.

Q: How has Drake shaped who you are today?

A: Drake has made me a go-getter and self-starter. I have met so many high-achieving people from ALL areas. People at Drake work hard and strive high; it makes it easy to stay encouraged when those around you are also accomplishing extraordinary things. I have become a better communicator and found my niche of working in sports. Upon entering Drake, I was a double major in public relations and environmental sustainability. After some thought and reflection on my experiences, I am now going to work for the NFL and accomplish one of my biggest dreams.

Q: What is next for you after you graduate?

A: I will be working as the event and experience associate for the Buffalo Bills.

Q: Who have been some of your important mentors during your time at Drake?

A: Professors Mary Edrington, Timm Pilcher, Dr. Kelly Bruhn, and Greg Kay.

Q: Are you involved in any student organizations, groups, or community service work? Tell us about those experiences.

A:  I was not involved with any organizations or groups because I was a freelance show choir choreographer, Drake women’s basketball emcee, athletic marketing intern, and a student marketeer for Red Bull.

Q: How has Drake helped you prepare for your future career?

A: I am now equipped in many areas to write, communicate, analyze, and problem solve. I have gained vital skills of critical thinking and implementing creative ideas to become a real life campaign, event, or strategy. I gained knowledge on how to bring energy to an atmosphere and to attract a demographic to an event that will be utilized in my next step in my career.

Q: Based on your experience, what makes Drake special and sets it apart from other schools?

A: It provides everything. I first came in as a small fish in a big pond, not knowing many people, and now I am a big fish who knows so many wonderful people at Drake and in Des Moines. Drake offers a big school experience while maintaining a small school feel, where you often see familiar faces walking to class. In winter, it takes you no more than five minutes to get to class. There are events and activities that engage many people all throughout campus and it feels like home.
