Q: Why did you choose to attend Drake?
A: I chose Drake not only for its small campus, but also for its welcoming environment. Drake offers strong academics and valuable opportunities for my future. It also provided the athletic experience I was looking for, as I played four years of soccer here.
Q: What is your favorite campus memory?
A: One of my favorite campus memories is from my freshman year, when we beat Memphis while they were ranked 15th in the country! Another favorite is participating in the campus Mental Health Walk with my team over the past two years. It’s a one-mile walk around campus with encouraging messages posted along the route. It’s a great event that brings the campus together, and I’ve really enjoyed being a part of it.
Q: How has Drake shaped who you are today?
A: Over the past four years, Drake University and Drake athletics have played a major role in shaping who I am, both as a student and as a person. I’ve learned the value of constantly growing, whether by stepping out of my comfort zone or trying something new. Drake has taught me how to advocate for myself and how to advocate for those around me. Living away from home for the first time helped me become more independent, while also showing me that it’s okay to lean on others and ask for help when needed. The experiences I’ve had here have helped me grow in confidence, purpose, and resilience.
Q: What is next for you after you graduate?
A: After graduation, I will be going back home to Kansas City, where I will begin studying for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) with the goal of passing in the months following graduation. I plan to apply to Children’s Mercy Hospital in hopes of getting a position as a pediatric or NICU nurse.
Q: Who have been some of your important mentors during your time at Drake?
A: Some important mentors for me here at Drake have been my soccer coaches, Lindsey Horner and Kevin Brennan; my anatomy professor, Dr. Alisa Drapeaux; and all of the nursing faculty, especially Dr. Katie Scott.
Q: Are you involved in any student organizations, groups, or community service work? Tell us about those experiences.
A: During my four years here at Drake, I played on the Drake women’s soccer team and was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). I also have volunteered at Meals for the Heartland, HOSA, Hubble Elementary, and the Grand Blue Mile. I am in the nursing club that was founded this year.
Q: How has Drake helped you prepare for your future career?
A: Drake has provided me with valuable opportunities to prepare for my future, including resume workshops, networking events, and the development of essential skills through my course work. I’ve learned to advocate for myself, build positive habits, and step outside of my comfort zone. Through Drake athletics, I’ve also gained time management skills, formed meaningful connections, and learned to appreciate every experience along the way.
Q: Based on your experience, what makes Drake special and sets it apart from other schools?
A: What makes Drake special is its inclusive campus environment. Drake offers a wide range of activities and academic opportunities that cater to diverse interests and backgrounds. Drake also provides a prestigious level of education that is difficult to find elsewhere. My experience at Drake has allowed me to form meaningful connections while continuing to learn and grow at a high academic level.
