Support SJMC student filmmakers
SJMC students and faculty are currently making a feature film, Devin & Mariya, which follows a guy and a girl who fall in love when they least expect it. Thier relationship is tested on a demanding road trip as they ask themselves if “making it work” is really enough.
The film is directed by Mithi Sivaprakash, assistant directed by Ryan Gledhill, and produced by Professor Lakshmi Tirumala. The film stars Logan Hock as Devin, and Cami Marquart as Mariya. For more information, please visit their Kickstarter page to watch the trailer and support the campaign!
SJMC student horror film accepted to film festivals
After rewatching a 2021 “thank you” video he edited for his soon-to-be-retired high school theater director, Chris Veninga thought to himself “I wonder if there’s a way to make this messed up?”
With graduation quickly approaching, Chris put together a script, a cast, and teamed up with co-director Mithi Sivaprakash and SJMC Digital Media Production professor Lakshmi Tirumala to shoot this horror film this past May. The film was shot in FAC’s Coleman Studio Theater.
After spending a few days in post-production, the one minute horror film Thank You was complete, with audio professor Ray Fredregill assisting in making the film as atmospheric as possible. Since it’s completion, Thank You has been accepted to three festivals; Austin Micro Film Festival, Chicago Horror Film Festival, and Canberra Short Film Festival in Australia. The team is currently waiting to hear back from several more.
Free conference that will interest journalism students
College students get free entry into the IEC Annual Conference at Drake on Tuesday, Sept. 24. This is a big one for anyone interested in writing or storytelling about sustainability. A few exceptional journalists to note as speakers/panelists – Tom Philpott, formerly of the progressive magazine Mother Jones, who broke the national story of the Iowa water quality lawsuit and other sustainability-in-farming issues, and the keynote address from Dr. Benjamin Pauli, who (literally) wrote the book on living through the Flint water crisis.
That day, at 11 a.m., Philpott will be visiting Professor Wilson’s class to talk about sustainability reporting.
YOU DO HAVE TO COMPLETE ONE THING TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE: REGISTER HERE so the team can get an accurate headcount for seating and lunch.
Students needed for workshops
Carnegie Higher Ed will on campus Oct. 2, to host three workshops with current students to learn more about the personality of our student body. These workshops, along with other efforts, will be used by Carnegie to help Admission and UCM better segment and target students based on personas.
All students are invited, as long as they are an undergraduate and have completed one term at Drake. To incentivize attendance we will be offering food during the workshops as well as entering students into a raffle for several $50 gift cards. Register here.
