Recent graduates in Drake University’s Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program finished in fifth place during the National Quiz Bowl Competition at the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 30th, 2022. The team representing Drake consisted of 2022 graduates Bridget Davidson, Kayla Strodtman, and Kayley Weiland.
After winning the state competition, the team competed in the district competition at the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association (MAATA) Annual Meeting. Drake’s program is the second from Iowa to ever have a team win the district competition and compete at the national level. Eleven other teams competed in the 13th annual national competition, including the University of Indianapolis, Illinois State University, Boise State University, the University of Miami, the University of Texas – Austin, New Mexico State University, the University of Nevada – Las Vegas, and three teams from districts who have individuals compete to earn a spot on the district team.
“This group of students represented Drake well at the Quiz Bowl. We are delighted that the time and effort that they put into their education the past few years has paid off,” said Nate Newman, Drake MAT program chair and professor. “Their accomplishment of finishing in the top 5 out of over 300+ programs in the country reflects the quality of our education program as it takes broad and detailed knowledge of athletic training to compete at that level.”
