Transfer students, pick up some Drake swag!
The University’s transfer student adviser, Lauren McCarthy, will set up a table in the Olmsted breezeway this week to greet transfer students and provide snacks and Drake swag — today, Monday, Feb. 7, 1-3 p.m., and Tuesday, Feb. 8, 10 a.m.-noon.
2022-23 scholarship applications available
A variety of SJMC scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year are available. Applications are on the table outside Mer. 119 or you can obtain one by emailing administrative assistant Denise Ganpat (denise.ganpat@drake.edu). Deadline for submission is Feb. 15.
Be a student media leader: Apply for 2022-23 positions
The Board of Student Communications is looking for next year’s media leaders. The BSC oversees Drake’s campus media: Drake Broadcasting System, Drake Magazine, Drake Political Review, DUiN, Periphery and The Times-Delphic. Students interested in serving as editor-in-chief of a BSC publication or president of DBS must apply for their desired position by March 11. To apply, send your resume and cover letter addressing your vision for the organization to Associate Professor Jeff Inman (jeff.inman@drake.edu) and SJMC Student Senator Madeleine Leigh (madeleine.leigh@drake.edu). Interviews will be held March 25.
In addition, help the Board of Student Communications rethink advertising across student media. The BSC will be hiring its first BSC Ad Director for the 2022-23 academic year. This position will oversee the creation and execution of a plan to sell advertising across BSC publications that accept advertising. Students interested in the position must apply by March 11. Dean’s office hiring research assistant
The dean’s office is hiring a research assistant to help create and administer a student survey for the SJMC accreditation portfolio. Familiarity with Qualtrics or similar survey platform is a plus. Deadline extended for summer travel seminars
Drake International extended the deadline for summer travel seminars to Feb. 15 due to being less accessible during the two online weeks that began this semester. Non-profit farm seeking social media intern
In Harmony Farm, a new Des Moines non-profit, is looking for an intern to build its social media brand. The farm’s mission is to serve the socially disadvantaged by leasing three-to-five-acre parcels of land to beginning farmers, many of whom are immigrants and refugees, and to help them grow their business and livelihood.
Intern responsibilities will include creating engaging social media posts, writing website copy and building letter drafts for correspondence. This position is paid and would require two to four hours of work per week.

Writing Workshop opens
The Writing Workshop is staffed by peer tutors, all of whom have taken at least one course to train them and familiarize them with writing theory and pedagogy. Tutors help students identify areas of difficulty and work with them on a range of issues, including fluency, organization, development, analysis and argument. Tutors also help students edit their work as needed. Tutors do NOT write papers for students, nor do they simply act as proofreaders.
The online student sign-up page is https://library.drake.edu/writing. Typically, an appointment is for one half hour. Students can sign up for more than one session if they choose. They may also request that a tutor keep a regular time slot available for them if they would like to come in each week.
Spring semester 2022 tutoring will be in-person. The Writing Workshop is located in Cowles Library, Room 47, on the lower level. Hours are:
Monday through Friday during the day
Monday through Thursday during the evening
Saturday afternoon
Sunday afternoon and evening
