JMC Days, Innovation Week events scheduled

The week of Oct. 29 is both JMC Days, the annual celebration of all things SJMC, and Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship Week, the brainchild of the Pappajohn Innovation Studio and Entrepreneurship at Drake. Some of the events scheduled:

SJMC Cool Jobs Expo, Monday, Oct. 29, 5-7 p.m. in various rooms in Meredith Hall (with horses near the Olmsted parking lot!): Alumni and employers from the Des Moines area will showcase jobs in their industries, from television to non-profit to start-ups. Drop-in sessions every 15 minutes from 5-7 p.m. at locations throughout Meredith Hall. Special guest: live Drake mascot Griff, because he has a REALLY cool job! Kim Waltman, shown at last year’s Cool Jobs Expo, will once again bring the horses she uses in her life coaching business.

Innovation Week Community Coffee, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 8 a.m. at the Pomerantz Stage of the Olmsted Center: Learn about student businesses Debonair Supply Co. (Noah Brinkmeyer) and Eximious (Matt Watson), and how they got their start with the support of the Lorentzen Student Hatchery.

Halloween open house, Wednesday, Oct. 31, 5-7 p.m. in Meredith Hall: Celebrate the holiday with treats and events at the Innovation Studio (Mer. 124C) and candy in the remodeled Drake Broadcasting System studio (Mer. 9 in the basement).

Creativity and Innovation Fair, Friday, Nov. 2, 2-4 p.m., Cowles Library Reading Room: Join fellow students from across campus at this multi- and interdisciplinary fair showcasing innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.

SJMC alums shine at local PR conference

Drake students and alums were front and center at the Public Relations Society of America Central Iowa Chapter’s annual conference on Oct. 18 at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield headquarters in downtown Des Moines.

Guest speakers included Andy Gerlt, JO’02, senior director of global innovation communications of Visa, and Emily Abbas, JO’97, MCL’99, senior vice president, chief marketing and communications officer of Bankers Trust. Jessie Scott, JO’12, MCL’12, digital content director at Meredith Corp., and Mario Rossi, JO’15, digital executive producer of WOI-TV’s We Are Iowa, also participated in a panel discussion.

In the awards ceremony, campaigns created by the 2018 senior public relations class won two PRIME awards in the Student Campaign category and a Community Champion award in the professional contest. Abby Delaney, JO’13, of Bankers Trust won outstanding chapter member.

Dr. Kelly Bruhn, associate professor and SJMC associate dean, serves as PRSA of Central Iowa president.

Class offers peek inside the music industry

The SJMC is offering a January Term class on the workings of the recorded music industry, taught by Tobi Parks, a professional musician who worked for Sony Music Entertainment and owns a local music studio. “A Peek Behind the Curtain of the Music Business” (JMC 99, CRN 184) is an interdisciplinary study of the music industry, including music publishing, music promotion, music business ethics, emerging music business technologies, copyright law, and other subjects directly pertinent to understanding today’s music industry landscape. The course will include a practical look at the industry through the work of Station 1 Records, a local record label.  The course includes daily guest speakers both in class and via video conference with executives from the leading companies in the music business like Sony Music, Warner Music Group, Kobalt Music Publishing, and others.

More study abroad opportunities in Chile

Universidad de los Andes — Drake’s partner institution in Santiago, Chile — has new opportunities for Drake students who are interested in studying abroad.

Drake students can join students from throughout the world in the upcoming Global Opportunities short-term programs that will be held in January 2019.

Also, starting in the March-July term, Universidad de los Andes it will be offering the LAMA Semester Exchange Program, which allows students to enroll in courses taught completely in English.  Program participants will be able to take Art and Humanities classes with local and international students without requiring Spanish proficiency.

Get ready for registration

Registration for spring semester classes begins Oct. 29. Check with your adviser to see if you need to sign up electronically for advising or on a printed signup sheet on your adviser’s door. If you have any questions, see Mallory in Mer. 119.

Meredith Hall building hours

Meredith Hall is unlocked during the following hours when classes are in session:

Sunday: 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m.
Monday-Friday: 7 a.m.-9:30 p.m.
Saturday: 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Students with SJMC majors can swipe into the building with a Drake ID even when the building is locked from 7 a.m.-2 a.m., Sunday-Thursday. Students who are already in the building when it is automatically locked are allowed to stay in the building. Students who need 24/7 access to swipe into the building should talk to their faculty member or adviser about how to obtain all-hours access.
