An estimated 30 million Americans have diabetes, and another 86 million Americans are at risk for that condition. In Iowa, about 42 percent of adults are estimated to have diabetes, and an estimated 40 percent of those with diabetes are unaware of their condition. June F. Johnson, professor of pharmacy practice at Drake University, wrote an article for The Des Moines Register’s Health section in which she outlines five steps for minimizing your diabetes risk.
Drake University and the American Diabetes Association will co-host a community awareness event and walk on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon in The Knapp Center. The free event includes free lunch, a variety of health screenings and other resources, and a meet-and-greet with Team USA triathlete Jay Hewitt, who lives with Type 1 diabetes.
