Drake Law School is partnering with Des Moines Metro Opera to present “The American Death Penalty as Reflected in the Opera ‘Dead Man Walking’: Age-Old Themes, Emerging Trends, and Recent Developments.”
Continuing legal education (CLE) credit is offered. This event is free and open to the public. David E. Drake, D.O., a local psychiatrist, will moderate the event. Panelists include:
- Michael Egel, General and Artistic Director, Des Moines Metro Opera
- Margaret Lattimore, Singer, Des Moines Metro Opera
- Prof. David McCord, Drake University Law School
- Kristine McIntyre, Stage Director, Des Moines Metro Opera
- David Adam Moore, Singer, Des Moines Metro Opera
- Elise Quagliata, Singer, Des Moines Metro Opera
- Prof. Gregory C. Sisk, University of St. Thomas School of Law
- Leon Spies, Iowa City Criminal Defense Attorney
This CLE will use the Metro Opera’s staging of “Dead Man Walking” this summer as a springboard for discussion of the changes in the death penalty in the United States over the last three decades. Mr. Egel will give an overview of the opera’s themes, followed by an overview of the last three decades by Prof. McCord, an expert in death penalty matters.
Prof. Sisk, a former Drake Law faculty member who is a renowned appellate litigator, will make remarks based on his representation of a death-sentenced inmate in the 9th Circuit. Mr. Spies, a sought-after Iowa criminal trial lawyer, will add insights derived from his representation of a death penalty client in Iowa federal district court.
A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Drake will follow, concluding with questions from the audience. A unique addition to the proceedings may be excerpts of the opera performed by members of the cast (subject to their availability).
This CLE will be held in Sheslow Auditorium at Drake University beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4. 1½ hours of CLE credit will be given. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind free CLE opportunity, offered in the evening for your convenience!
And definitely don’t miss the Des Moines Metro Opera performing in Indianola from June 28 to July 19. For more information, or to register for the event, go to http://www.law.drake.edu/cle/upcomingEvents.aspx.
