Hawaiian JTerm Experience for Counseling Students

J-Term brought a multitude of international travel opportunities to School of Education students.  Among them, counseling students were given an opportunity to travel to Kapaa, Hawaii on Kauai.  The course introduced student to the Clubhouse Model for individuals with mental illness.  They were given the chance to work in a clubhouse in Des Moines, learn how it functions and what standards each clubhouse must follow.  Then the class traveled to Hawaii where they learned about the Hawaiian culture and spent a week at a clubhouse on Kauai working with individuals with disabilities.  Students were able to see firsthand how international standards are upheld in both environments.
