Maura Lyons, associate professor of art history, recently received two grants totaling $9,500 for the exhibit she is curating with Drake students at the Anderson Gallery titled “Draw Your Weapons: Civil War Cartoons from Harper’s Weekly.”

Lyons received two separate grants on behalf of the gallery—one in the amount of $4,500 from the State Historical Society, Inc., and another in the amount of $5,000 from Humanities Iowa, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, bringing her total grant funding for the exhibition to $9,500.

“Draw Your Weapons: Civil War Cartoons from Harper’s Weekly” will offer a fresh perspective on the American Civil War through the display of selected editorial cartoons from the pages of Harper’s Weekly, a popular illustrated publication from that time. Additionally, the exhibit will help to recover the topical references in these cartoons and guide audiences through the ongoing public debates about the war and its consequences.

“Draw Your Weapons: Civil War Cartoons from Harper’s Weekly” opens on Nov. 7 and will run through Jan. 24.
