Indianola, Iowa – Several journalism students rubbed elbows Sunday with state and national politicians and with members of the national press corps. The occasion was the 36th annual steak fry hosted by Sen. Tom Harkin, and this year’s keynote speaker was Vice President Joe Biden.
Also speaking was San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, who delivered the keynote at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Castro’s twin brother, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, also attended but did not address the crowd.
Biden’s attendance and speculation about Castro’s national political ambitions drew a significant presence from the national press corps, including reporters from the New York Times, Washington Post, ABC News, CBS News and Politico.
Junior magazine major Meagan Flynn covered the event for Texas Monthly, where she interned last summer. Her 1,000-word article, “Rites of Passage, Iowa Edition,” was posted Monday.
The other journalism students were Monica Worsley, Lillian Schrock, Ruth Ronnau and Sarah Fulton.
