The Principal Financial Group Center for Global Citizenship will highlight the plight of Burundi refugees with a concert and presentation on Friday, Nov. 30. The event will feature the Striving for Eternal Life (SFEL) Choir, a group of refugee students from Burundi. The presentation will be held in Sheslow Auditorium at 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Drake actuarial science student Vincent Niyokwizera leads the SEFL Choir. Members will share their stories about fleeing from the Burundi Civil War, which lasted for 12 years and claimed an estimated 300,000 lives. The students all spent part of their lives in refugee camps where they lived with hunger and never had clean, running water. They will also discuss their experience of adapting to Iowa schools, a new culture, and a new language.
