The Patty and Fred Turner Jazz Center will be open to the public for a reception on Friday, Sept. 16. The doors to the Turner Jazz Center will open at 9 p.m., following the Jazz Ensemble I and II concert, which will be held in the Performing Arts Hall in the Harmon Fine Arts Center.
The Turner Jazz Center is located on the north end of the Harmon Fine Arts Center, near the junction of 25th Street and Carpenter Avenue. Parking is available in the Harmon Fine Arts parking lot on the east side of 25th Street.
The open house will feature tours, including the recording studio and isolation room. The Drake Jazz Combo II will play on stage and cookies and coffee will be provided. Plans for the fall concert season at the Turner Jazz Center will be announced throughout the evening and opportunities to sign up for updates of Turner Center Events will be available.
The state-of-the-art Patty and Fred Turner Jazz Center was constructed thanks to a $1.5 million dollar gift by Drake alumnus and retired senior chairman of McDonald’s Corp. Fred Turner.
The season kickoff will follow a 7:30 p.m. joint concert from Drake Jazz Ensemble I and Drake Jazz Ensemble II, which will be held in Drake’s Performing Arts Hall, Harmon Fine Arts Center, 2505 Carpenter Ave.
Fred and Patty Turner Professor of Jazz Studies Andrew Classen directs Drake’s Jazz Ensemble One. The ensemble has toured throughout the United States and has performed at the internationally renowned Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. John Kizilarmut will direct Drake Jazz Ensemble Two.
