Get the details on the October 22 national alumni day of service

What is DU Good Day?

DU Good Day, set for Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, is an opportunity to gather with other charitable alums in your area to volunteer together. This year, the theme is “Feed the Need,” which focuses on a local projects aimed at fighting hunger. Participants of all ages are encouraged to dress in Drake apparel to show school spirit. The idea for Drake’s National Day of Service also came from a desire for alumni to continue the mission of the University after they graduate and are no longer participating in campus-oriented service activities.

Where did the idea for a national day of service come from?

Members of Drake’s National Alumni Board of Directors wanted to create an event that would both allow alumni to connect with each other and also make a positive impact.

This date doesn’t work for us. Should we still do an event?

Drake and the National Alumni Board believe community service should be an ongoing, year-round effort. If you can’t participate on the designated day, alumni are encouraged to do good in the name of Drake anytime and anywhere. Share news of your projects by contacting marketing@drake.edu.

What is Feed the Need?

Each year, DU Good Day projects will focus around a specific issue. This inaugural event centers around hunger, with alumni groups from sites across the country united in their focus to help feed the world, be it by stocking shelves at local food banks or packing meals for people in developing countries.

How can I participate in Feed the Need?

Signing up to volunteer is easy. Drake will make an online registration form available in the coming weeks. Register and you’ll be connected with a project coordinator in your city regarding specific locations, times and instructions.

Are families and non-alums invited?

Family and friends of Drake are encouraged to participate alongside alumni. Children under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult, and all participants will be required to sign standard safety waivers.

What is the best way to get connected with other Bulldogs in my community?

Selecting your specific city when you sign up will connect you with Drake alumni planning a project in your area. If you can’t participate in DU Good Day, but want to tap into your local alumni network, contact the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations for information on getting involved where you live.

What if I’m a lone Bulldog?

You don’t have to be part of a pack to participate in DU Good Day. Although envisioned as an opportunity for Drake alumni to join together, far-flung Bulldogs can volunteer solo, or with friends and family. Upload pictures to the Do Good Day Facebook page to connect virtually with others participating across the country. Keep updated by “liking” the official Facebook page for the Drake University National Alumni Association.

How do I know if I’m making a difference?

As if the warm, fuzzy feeling you’ll get from volunteering isn’t enough, Drake also plans to publish a story quantifying some of the accomplishments of DU Good Day.

What do I get for participating?

The first 250 to register for this free event will receive special Drake DU Good Day T-shirts to wear at the service site on October 22. Participants will be able to order more DU Good Day shirts online.

What is the National Alumni Board?

Members of Drake’s National Alumni Board of Directors serve on a variety of committees focused on programming, student recruitment, marketing and fundraising for the University. These individuals are serious about the Alumni Association’s mission of providing its alumni with a channel for their “imaginative and meaningful participation in the life and future of the University.” Nominated by a committee of the Alumni Association Board, directors serve three-year terms and meet on campus three times per year. Board meetings are open to all alumni. Visit alumni.drake.edu to learn more.

What if I don’t want to wait to volunteer with Drake?

Des Moines area alumni are invited to volunteer at the Drake tent at the Des Moines Arts Festival held Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26. This is a great way for Drake alumni and friends to get involved in a wonderful community event. As we do each year, we will be selling soda and bottled water to thirsty festival attendees, and the net proceeds go toward alumni programs in Central Iowa.
