Next fall, Drake University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication will offer a retooled Master of Communication Leadership program. The graduate-level program — which is comprised of 36 credit hours — has been redesigned to reflect the rapidly evolving nature of the contemporary media and communications environment.
Participants will take courses through the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as well as the College of Business and Public Administration. Required courses of the program include Corporate Social Responsibility, New Media Strategies, Leadership and Human Capital Development, and Sustainable Development.
Students may also participate in the Dardis Communications Leadership Essentials Workshop, which consists of one-on-one coaching intended to develop presentation and sale skills, as well as tools to maintain a professional image in a results-oriented atmosphere.
Patricia Prijatel, Drake’s emeritus E.T. Meredith distinguished professor of journalism, said that the value of the program comes not only from its cross-disciplinary perspective, but also its emphasis on ethical leadership.
“At a time of both great upheaval and major media innovation, the communications field is especially in need of leaders with the foresight to prepare for and manage change,” Prijatel said.
“The Master’s of Communication Leadership program helps communications professionals learn to serve their organizations and communities ethically and responsibly through efficient and effective communications. The program provides a guidebook for professionals in building leadership potential and thriving in an ever-changing communications marketplace.”
Five years of professional experience are required for admission to the MCL program. Registration for the course begins this spring; the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is required of all students.
