Drake rower Chelsea Smith of Minneapolis has been invited to attend the USRowing Lightweight Under-23 National Team Camp, which will be held in New Milford, Conn., at the GMS Rowing Center.

The camp will be used to determine which rowers will compete in the Under-23 World Championship Trials from June 22-25 at Mercer Lake, N.J.

Smith, a senior biochemistry, cell and molecular biology major, will be competing in either the lightweight quad, double or single competition at this event. She will be vying for an opportunity to represent the United States at the 2010 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Brest, Belarus.

Following the completion of the camp, Smith will travel to Oklahoma City to begin her residency at the USRowing High Performance Center.

“I am very excited for this opportunity to continue rowing and pursue a spot on the Under-23 National team,” said Smith.

After training at USRowing’s lightweight Pre-Elite Sculling Camp in New York last summer, Smith competed for the New York Rowing Association and finished second in the lightweight women’s singles sculls at the USRowing’s Under-23 World Championship Trials.

Smith went on to win the lightweight women’s single sculls, the lightweight women’s single scull dash and the lightweight women’s double at the North West International Rowing Association Regatta at Lake Elmo, Minn., last summer.
