Drake Head Start By the Numbers

Drake Head Start is the largest Head Start program in the state of Iowa. The numbers tell the story.

6 Counties: Drake Head Start serves the counties of Boone, Story, Jasper, Marion, Warren and Polk.

100 Toddlers: Early Head Start offers programing for children ages birth to three and their families.

904 Children: Three- and four-year-olds and their families are served through more programs in Head Start.

40 Classrooms: Daily Head Start programming takes place in 40 classrooms and programs, including 15 in the Des Moines Schools. These consist of both full- and half-day programs. There are also at-home programs.

7.5 Million Dollars: Drake Head Start operates on a annual budget of $7.5 million. One quarter of those dollars must be raised through individual contributions and donations.

86 Employees: Drake Head Start is run by 86 employees, 20 of which are based in the Central Office on Drake’s campus.

32 Years: This year marks the 32nd year of partnership between Head Start and the Drake University School of Education.
