Student pharmacists’ community involvement recognized

The Drake chapter of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) received the Outstanding Community Services Award at the SNPhA National Convention.

The award is given to an SNPhA student chapter that demonstrates a strong commitment to its local community through an emphasis on service and local involvement based on the ideals of the national association.

The Drake chapter coordinated several events during the 2005-2006 academic year including the Drake Diabetes Clinic, clothing and food drives, and a fundraiser for the Xavier University College of Pharmacy Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Drake’s SNPhA members also held a brown bag session to help senior citizens sort their prescriptions and learn about possible drug interactions at the Des Moines University Senior Health Fair.

The Student National Pharmaceutical Association is an educational and service association dedicated to the pharmacy profession, professional development and the full participation of a diverse student body in pharmacy and other health-related professions. SNPhA plans, organizes, coordinates and presents programs geared toward improvement of the health, education and social environment of the community. Members play an active role in regional and national association meetings.
