Memorial service for “Mr. Drake” set for Wednesday
A celebration of life for Paul Morrison will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 11 a.m.-noon in the Knapp Center. Morrison, who died last week at age 100, graduated from Drake in 1939 with a degree in journalism. After serving as an Army journalist, he became head of Drake’s news bureau, then athletics business manager and sports information director, before retiring in 1986. But Morrison never really left campus, volunteering as the Drake athletic historian and attending many Drake sports events. He established a scholarship fund that supports Drake student athletes majoring in SJMC.
Iconic SJMC building focus of lecture
Dirk Lohan, a nationally known architect and grandson of modernist master Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, will speak on Thursday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. in Mer. 106. Mies, as he was known, is considered by many to be the pre-eminent architect of the 20th Century. He designed Meredith Hall as the centerpiece of Drake’s campus renovation in the 1950s and ‘60s.
Lohan’s lecture is free and open to the public.
Iowa Newspaper Foundation offers scholarships
The Iowa Newspaper Foundation offers scholarships for communications majors in a range of disciplines. Application deadline is Feb. 9, 2018. For more information, see https://inanews.com/foundation/scholarships/. Applications are also available on the table outside of Mer. 118.
SPJ awards contest open
The Society of Professional Journalists is now accepting entries for the Mark of Excellence awards, honoring the best in collegiate journalism. The contest has categories for newspaper, magazine, web, TV and radio entries. Deadline for submissions is Jan. 11, 2018.
