Beginning Friday, May 2, five graduating art and design students will present their senior capstone project titled “Primal” at the Anderson and Weeks Galleries on Drake University’s campus. Their work will be on display until May 16.
The exhibit will showcase a mixture of graphic design, painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking work. Each student artist has taken a slightly different approach:
Lizabeth Buck, from Overland Park, Kansas is working on her B.A. in drawing. She uses her work to explore relationships between natural and man-made environments, allowing viewers to consider the materials and their transformative properties.
Emily Hartley, from Waukee, Iowa is working on her B.F.A. in printmaking. She uses her work as a form of self-reflection and exploring the vastness of space.
Emily Hohn, from Sterling, Virginia is working on her B.F.A. in graphic design. She juxtaposes a mixture of her own characters and existing pop culture gaming icons with references to classic design elements.
Jake Mullenbach, from Ankeny, Iowa is working on his B.F.A., focusing on digital art. His recent drawings are inspired by his experiences interacting with patients as an EMT.
Sandi Tomer, from Des Moines, Iowa is working on her B.F.A. in drawing. She creates both sculptures and 2D work. Some of her work deals with people and their possessions while others address the relationships between society and nature.
The closing reception for the exhibit will occur on Friday, May 16 from 3–5 p.m. in the Anderson Gallery. Refreshments will be provided.

About the Anderson Gallery
The Anderson Gallery was established in 1996 as a dedicated space for the exploration of contemporary art and design. Additionally, the gallery hosts curated exhibitions of historically significant work as well as annual showcases of student work from the Department of Art and Design. The gallery is a nonprofit branch of the College of Arts and Sciences at Drake University, occupying a versatile 1800-square-foot space on the first floor of the Harmon Fine Arts Center.
The Anderson Gallery is open six days a week: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Friday through Sunday, 12–4 p.m., and extended hours on Thursdays from 12–8 p.m. The gallery is closed on Mondays and during University holidays.
The Weeks Gallery is open during regular building hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
