Drake University hosts annual Global and National Public Health Week

Global and National Public Health Week at Drake University will begin Wednesday, April 2, and continues Monday, April 7 and Wednesday, April 9. Five events will be held throughout the week—all of which are free and open to the public.

The week will kick off on April 2 with a panel discussion on careers in public health. The discussion will take place at 6 p.m. in Olmsted Center, Rooms 312-313. The panel will feature:

Laura Jackson, executive vice president, Wellmark
Julie McMahon, retired division director, Iowa Department of Public Health
Michael Bousselot, health policy advisor for Gov. Terry Branstad
Andy McGuire, president/CEO, Meridian Health Plan of Iowa

An interactive web discussion with students from Des Moines University will occur immediately following the panel.

The events continue on April 7 with a viewing of the Academy Award-nominated documentary, Born into Brothels. The film will begin at 7 p.m. in the Sussman Theater located in Olmsted Center.

On April 9, two final events will be held. The first event is a lecture by Vijay Chawla, a pediatric physician at Mayo Clinic. Chawla will present “Experiences and Encounters with Child Abuse: A Pediatrician’s Perspective,” at 3 p.m. in the Sussman Theater located in Olmsted Center.

There will be a panel discussion immediately following Chawla’s lecture. The panel will feature:

Kenneth McCann, Blank Children’s Hospital
Laurie Gherke, Blank Children’s Hospital

Health sciences students will present posters following the panel from 5–6 p.m. in Harvey Ingham Hall.
