“Script Your Future” promotes awareness of prescription medicine

On Saturday, Feb. 22 from 8 a.m. until noon, Drake Pharmacy Unified Group of Students (DRxUGS) and Rho Chi, an honorary pharmacy fraternity, will be concluding the Script Your Future campaign with a free health fair at Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines.

During the month of February, DRxUGS and Rho Chi have been participating in Script Your Future, a campaign aimed at promoting awareness and the importance of taking medication as prescribed by physicians.

Students from Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Grand View University, and Mercy College of Health Sciences have teamed up with local licensed healthcare professionals to provide education on healthy lifestyles and proper medication use.

This health fair, which is free and open to the public, will offer a variety of health screenings and education including blood pressure readings, cholesterol, bone density, and blood sugar screenings, education on diet and exercise health, and much more. Prizes will be offered every hour during the event to those who visit seven or more booths.

“As a future pharmacist, these moments are what helps us grow and develop into great healthcare providers,” says Nupur Chopra, a third year pharmacy student at Drake University.

In 2010, Drake’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences began offering free wellness screenings to the Des Moines community. With the goal to provide free health screenings and education to those individuals who are uninsured, underprivileged, and financially unstable, Drake students have helped over 600 community members.
