Drake LEAD students support “I Have a Dream” Foundation

On Nov. 24, Drake University’s Leadership 100 (LEAD 100) class and the Des Moines “I Have a Dream” Foundation will hold “Dash and Doughnut,” a 3k run and movie viewing to benefit the Des Moines “I Have a Dream” Foundation.

Race information and registration for the run will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Drake University’s Olmsted Center, 1245 29th Street, Des Moines. The race, which will occur around the Drake neighborhood, will begin at 9:30 a.m. In addition to the run, the group will show the movie “Elf” at 11 a.m. in the Sussman Theater, also located in the Olmsted Center.

The LEAD 100 class at Drake University is part of the Leadership Education and Development concentration, which prepares students to contribute to their communities through ethical and innovative leadership. A major emphasis of the concentration is to provide students with opportunities to connect with outside agencies to see how leadership is executed.

“’Dash and Doughnut’ is a wonderful opportunity for LEAD students to connect with a Des Moines nonprofit,” says Tom Westbrook, professor of education and director of LEAD. “This partnership allows Drake students to contribute and influence an organization in a positive way and see leadership come to life.”

The funds raised during this event will support the Des Moines “I Have a Dream” Foundation’s programming. The foundation motivates
and empowers children who come from low-income communities to
reach their education and career goals by providing a long-term program of mentoring, tutoring, and enrichment, as well as tuition assistance for higher education.

A $5 donation is recommended for both the run and the movie. Doughnuts and snacks will be provided.
