Drake Law School Tax Clinic receives federal funding for three years

Jerry Foxhoven, executive director of the Drake Legal Clinic, recently received a grant from the Internal Revenue Service in the amount of $85,000 per year for the next three years to continue operating the Drake Law Tax Clinic.

The Drake Law Tax Clinic first opened in 2012 with a grant of $75,000. Foxhoven says the Tax Clinic is both a benefit for the community and Drake law students.

“The Tax Clinic allows Drake Law students to represent real clients,” says Foxhoven. “It is great, practical experience for students who are hoping to work in the business area. Or, for students who aren’t planning on going into litigation, but primarily want to focus on business and tax.”

At the Tax Clinic, Drake law students provide services to people in the Des Moines community who earn less than 250% of the poverty rate. In most cases, these individuals do not have the financial resources to employ an attorney. The services provided include: handling of IRS audits, applying for Collection Due Process (CDP) hearings, offers of compromise, installment payment agreements, applying for innocent spouse treatment, protests to IRS appeals office and hearings before said appeals office, and petitions with the United States Tax Court. The Tax Clinic also provides English-as-a-Second Language services in the form of educational outreach and consultations.
