Drake choir concert on Feb. 18 funds international tour

The Drake University Choir will host a benefit concert in Sheslow Auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. to raise funds for its international tour in May 2012.

The concert will feature a wide range of performances by the entire choir as well as individual members. Musical selections will include Broadway tunes, vocal jazz, original compositions and opera.

Tickets cost $5 for students and $25 for non-students. Sheslow Auditorium is inside Drake’s Old Main building, located at 2507 University Ave.

The Drake Choir is a diverse group of students ““ representing each of Drake’s Colleges ““ selected as the touring ensemble of the University. The choir tours the Midwest every year and tours internationally every four years. In 2008, the choir performed in Italy and Austria.

This year the choir will be visiting Ireland and Wales.

“Wales is famous for their singing tradition, and we’ll share a concert with two Welsh men’s choruses,” said Aimee Beckmann-Collier, director of choral studies. “Our students are also singing in the top venues in Ireland, so we are very excited.”

Some of those top venues include St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, St. Aidan’s Church in Ferns, St. Mary’s Church in Killarney and St. Nicholas Cathedral in Galway.
