Drake alumni to discuss news, sports at lunch event

September 22, 2010
Drake alumni John Walters and Dave Zawilinski will discuss sports journalism as part of Drake University's fall Let's DU Lunch series on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

The open to the public event will be held at All Play, 615 Third St. in downtown Des Moines. Networking begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the lecture and luncheon at noon.

Walters, of Des Moines, began his journalism career at KCCI-TV in 1982, where he continued to work after receiving his bachelor's degree from Drake in 1984. Since 1996, he has served as sports director for ABC5.

Zawilinkski, weekend anchor for ABC5, began working at the station as an intern and sports photographer while attending Drake. He graduated from the University in 2005.

Drake and the Greater Des Moines Partnership sponsor the Let's DU Lunch series. Tickets cost $17 per lunch, and reservations are recommended due to limited seating.

The series will continue through the fall with the following presentations:

  • Oct. 13 -- Jeff Link and Will Rogers will lead a discussion on current affairs and political campaigns
  • Nov. 3 -- Brigadier General Timothy Orr will present a lecture on public defense
