Men’s soccer defeates Des Moines Menace

In a game billed as the “Battle of the Elites,” the Drake men’s soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over the Des Moines Menace on May 8 at Valley Stadium.

Junior Michael Noonan, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, registered what proved to be the game-winning tally at the 3:19 mark of the first half drilling a pass from senior Matt Kuhn, of Raytown, Mo., just outside the top of the box to best Menace goalkeeper Jason Williams to the lower left corner.

“I thought for our guys getting ready for final exams this week that they provided an exciting game,” Drake head coach Sean Holmes commented.  “The experience was good for everyone and it was useful for us to see who will be ready to compete in the fall.”

The contest served as the finale of the Bulldogs’ spring campaign and will mark Drake’s final game until opening its 2010 season at Michigan, a 2009 NCAA Tournament participant, on Sept. 3.
