Drake University’s spring International Film series will
conclude Sunday, April 5, with a screening of “Battle of Algiers,” a
film commissioned by the Algerian government to show both sides of Algerian
strife for independence.

The film will begin at 2 p.m. in room 101 of Meredith Hall,
2805 University Ave. Vibs Petersen, professor of women’s studies, will
introduce the film.

In the wake of colonialism, the Algerian revolution arises
against French imperial power. The French foreign legion has left Vietnam in
defeat and has something to prove; Algeria is ready for independence.

In the clash that ensues, the torture used by the French is
contrasted with the Algerian’s use of bombs in soda shops. Ultimately, the film
looks at war as harmful to everyone who participates in it.

The series is sponsored by the Drake Center for Global
Citizenship. More information about the center is available online at www.drake.edu/international/cgc/about/index.php.
