To celebrate Heartburn Awareness Month, Drake pharmacy students will offer heartburn screenings, which are free and open to the public, from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Hy-Vee on East Euclid, 2540 East Euclid in Des Moines.

Student pharmacists, under pharmacist supervision, will be screening patients for heartburn, as well as sharing information with patients about heartburn triggers and heartburn prevention. With the holiday season fast approaching, students hope to help patients discover which foods are generally safe to consume without causing heartburn.

In addition, pharmacy students will offer diabetes screenings from 3-6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16, at Hy-Vee on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, 3330 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway in Des Moines.

Students hope the screenings will raise awareness and provide information to the community about diabetes, while giving students the experience for their careers. Under pharmacist supervision, student pharmacists will test blood glucose, which is the determining factor of diabetes.

All events are organized by the student chapter of American Pharmacists Association and are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Daphne Pearson at djs018@drake.edu.
